Abstract

Purpose: This study was to understand the meaning and the essence of insomnia experiences of elderly women who experienced insomnia in community.

Methods: Data was collected through in-depth interviews with five elderly women in community from March to November 2008. Data was analyzed by Giorgi"s phenomenological method (2003).

Results: The components in common with insomnia of elderly women in community were as follows: "The body is hard to bear due to light sleep by aging", "Being sleepless for the stress life events or worriments", "The daily life comes to be difficult due to strength falls down or lethargy", "Looking the methods in its way or attempting but remain unsolved problem", "Accepting it as natural aging process", "The body condition is aggravated due to vicious circle by being repeated insomnia". The general structure of insomnia experiences in elderly women was being negative change pattern in time context.

Conclusion: This study contributed to provide fundamental data for sleep nursing intervention strategy development to promote their health and quality of life by increasing understanding of the essential meaning of insomnia of elderly women in community.
